Debilitating Effects of Non-Treatment

Despite effective treatments, millions of Americans affected by mental illness remain untreated or under-treated for their conditions.

  • Due to lack of awareness about mental illness and recovery, stigma or financial barriers, there are often long delays --sometimes decades--between the onset of symptoms and when people first seek treatment.
  • Adults with serious mental illness die 25 years younger than other Americans, largely due to an increased risk of having chronic medical conditions that are not treated.
The economic cost of untreated mental illness is more than 100 billion dollars annually in the United States. The emotional devastation is even more costly.
  • Without treatment, the consequences of mental illness for the individual and society are staggering: unnecessary disability, unemployment, substance abuse, homelessness, inappropriate incarceration, and wasted lives.
  • 90% of those who die by suicide have a diagnosable mental disorder.
