Meet volunteer Keith Battle and his friend and Crossroads client, David Wright. Keith moved his family from Clinton, MD to the Eastern Shore for "quality of life reasons." His wife, Pauline, works in Falls Church, VA a substantial commuting distance away from this idyllic setting on the Shore. Even with the mix of telecommuting available to her, the schedule requires Keith to step up to the plate in his parenting duties. He does so happily. They have 2 children.
Keith is an upbeat, optimistic man of vision and multiple talents. His labor of love was designing and wiring the home he now shares with his family. His childhood wouldn't suggest that his life would be as positive as he projects and as outwardly focused--unselfishly helping others. He is a generous and giving man who teaches those around him to remain goal oriented.
Growing up in Southeast Washington, DC Keith was all too familiar with poverty. Living with a parent whose primary income came from drug deals, Keith chose to leave home at age 17. As he so boldly stated, "I chose not to take a dead end path." Keith defines 'young entrepreneur' as he found ways to become educated while working. Education was his ticket away from gangs. After dabbling in computer programming and office procedures he completed a four-year program becoming a licensed electrician. He now proudly has that designation, The State of Maryland Journeyman Certification, in electric. Furthermore, he was invited to teach and did so at both Prince George and Anne Arundel Community Colleges.
Keith is a volunteer in Crossroads' adult program. His developing friendship with David is a shining example of what makes the volunteer program so positive. Seeing David and Keith interacting in the community reinforces the true definition of friendship--just being there for each other.
Won't you consider being a friend to a client at Crossroads? Keith knows he has made a difference in David's life, because David has done the same for him. The benefits of volunteering are immeasurable. For more information contact Suzanne Moore at moores@ccinconline.com or 410.758.3050 ext. 26.
